319.11 Gattaca.
The topic of this paper is on the film "Gattaca." The film "Gattaca" is a projection of the eugenics world in the visible future and the fulfillment of genetic engineering, which is the scientific and deliberate manipulation or re-design of human genes for the purpose of producing "superior" individuals. The film visualizes that oncoming era when "today's culture of perfectionist striving" (Ebert 1997) will be the norm: a society, dominated by super beings, who, as test-tube babies, grow to be disease-immune and defect-free, of superior IQ and guaranteed longevity (Ebert). As supreme-quality products of genetic engineering, their physiological, mental and psychological imperfections are pre-empted and stamped out and a perfect DNA structure predetermined, according to their parents' factory specifications.

320.87 Salem Possessed And The Crucible.
This paper discusses the movie, The Crucible, which was derived entirely from the book entitled, Salem Possessed: the Social Origins of Witchcraft by Paul S. Boyer, with only a few differences, owing to technical limitations in movie production. The movie had to reduce the number of characters of the books in order to produce it on cinema. Time lapses were shortened, due again to cinematic limitations in presenting the events. Furthermore, the nature of the charges against Giles Corey was not identical. In the book, he is charged with contempt of court for refusing to plead either innocent or guilty. In the movie, he is charged with contempt for refusing to name the person who told him about Thomas Putnam's intent to buy land by means of false accusation. And while Abigail Williams is presented as an 11-year-old girl in the book, she is 17 years in the movie in order to justify or make credible her being the lust object of John Proctor.

322.15904 The Matrix: An Ideological Analysis.
This essay discusses the film The Matrix as a cinematic artifact using "ideology" as a critical method, in order to understand how social and economic structures are represented and reinforced/interrogated in the mass media today. This essay will argue the thesis that an ideological analysis of The Matrix is useful as it reveals the parameters of "acceptable" representation of existing social and economic structures in the corporate-dominated mass media. In this context, this essay will attempt to answer the research question: Does The Matrix interrogate and challenge, or reinforce and maintain, existing social and economic structures in western society today?
