323. 15918 Synopsis of "M" (and) Huckleberry Finn: An Analysis.

This four page undergraduate paper is in the form of two essays. The first essay is about German director Fritz Lang's classic 1931 film, "M", which tells the story of a child murderer and his fate. The author presents a synopsis of the film, concludes that justice prevails in the end, and analyzes Lang's themes. The second essay concerns Mark Twain's classic 1885 American novel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. The author describes the content of the book and delves into the reasons for the historical importance of Twain's best-known story.

324. 147 What's Love Got to Do With It?

This essay is my critical examination of the film The Piano and of Bell Hook's essay concerning sexism and misogyny. I first read the essay and then watched the film. At first, I was just trying to see what Ms. Hook was pointing out, but then I realized I needed to make my own opinions about the movie, while still being enlightened by the examination of Bell Hook. The Piano "seduces and excites audiences with its uncritical portrayal of sexism and misogyny." Misogyny and sexism are the central themes in the movie, although I have to say that the movie relies on these ideas to keep it alive and of interest to women because it's the very most thing they are familiar with. The Piano raises interesting and important questions about morality, love and the ends justifying the means. It's a story of manipulation, blackmail and unexpected attraction.

325. 200 Erich von Stroheim-A Direction of Passion.

Erich von Stroheim's financial excesses and explosive temperament were condemned by many movie studios, von Stroheim was known for his eccentricities and his life full of excessive misguided energy. He was not only a passionate director, but a writer of many films, and a magnificent actor that took on many difficult roles. Erich von Stroheim - Director, actor, writer, editor, producer and costume designer. One of the true - if controversial - geniuses of the silent screen, he was initially an actor and in 1914 became a prot¨¦g¨¦ of D.W. Griffith. Von Stroheim's financial excesses and explosive temperament were condemned by the Universal (and later other studios). He was sometimes banished from the set, removed from production and saw his films edited to tragic proportions - thus quashing his artistic rebellion under the strict studio policy.

326. 310 An Analysis of Goodfellas.

This paper discusses "Goodfellas" - a film about gangsters and crime. In "Goodfellas", Henry Hill partakes in the same type of illegal activities as his cohorts Tommy and Jimmy, but Henry employs a sensibility and loyalty that makes his character far more sympathetic. If Henry gets violent, he only becomes so out of principle or because the other guy "has it coming". When Tommy acts similarly, it comes from a deep-seated place of pure evil. For example, there is a scene in which Henry pistol-whips a young man who made advances on his girlfriend, Karen. The audience certainly has no trouble siding with Henry in this instance because the guy he attacks is a jerk, plain and simple.

327. 317 Hitchcock and the Auteur Theory.

This film discusses the Auteur Theory and Hitchcock. The Auteur Theory states that the best films carry the imprints of their auteur (authors) on them (Lavery, p.10). The merits of this theory has been a subject of much cinematic debate over the years, as it gives most of the credit to the director of the film with little regard for the team of people around him/her. However, making a good case for the theory stand the films of Alfred Hitchcock, each bearing the indelible thumbprint of its creator.

328. 316 The Role of Women in Classic Film.

This paper discusses the role of women in Hollywood's classic film. It has been written that, in art, there are generally two archetypal female characters: the whore and the Madonna. In the following pages I will argue that, in Hollywood's classic film noir period, there was often little distinction between the two. In The Maltese Falcon's, Brigid O'Shaughnessy and Sunset Blvd.'s, Norma Desmond, we find two women who are equal parts spider woman and maternal virgin. These two characters represent a historical period in America when women were just beginning to come into their own, and as a result the characters seem conflicted about which societal role to play, often choosing to utilize whatever label suits their needs at the moment. This type of fickleness can be summed up in one word: Manipulation.

329. 341 The Films of John Sayles.

This paper discusses the films by John Sayles. Sometimes referred to as the "Ralph Nader of filmmaking", many of Sayles' films share a common ambition - to expose the corrupt, opportunistic behavior of people in powerful positions, and champion the cause of the underdog who, despite daunting odds, accepts the challenge to bring these corrupt forces down. Two Sayles films in particular that are wrought with greed, graft, dishonesty, corruption, those unwittingly caught up in it and those who wish to expose it are 1988's, "Eight Men Out" and 1991's, "City of Hope". These two films also share another important trait, that of an unusually large cast of characters, each important in their own right to the events of the story, and whose lives intertwine, sometimes making it difficult to ascertain the good from the evil. But this is true in real life as well, and through their large numbers, Sayles' casts of characters represent a microcosm of society in which almost every personality type and moral perspective is represented, resulting in engrossing story-telling that makes the audience want to see which perspective will win out in the end.
