344. 507 Elements of Films.

This paper discusses different elements of film. Mise-en-scene is the French theatrical term for "placing on stage"- which originally referred to the arrangement of visual elements in a stage production, defined by a proscenium arch. The proscenium arch separates the audience from the action. In theater, the mise-en-scene is three-dimensional, whereas on film it exists in a two-dimensional frame. There are three types of movement to consider when analyzing the overall movement of a film: camera movement, subject movement and optical movement. Camera movement involves the actual movement of the camera itself around stationary objects of people. Subject movement involves the motion of the subject in relationship to the frame. Optical movement is the changing of focus from one object to another, designed to draw the eye of the viewer from one part of the frame to another.

346. 580 An Analysis of Two films: "Platoon" and "Apocalypse Now".

This paper is a comparison on two films. The films "Platoon" and "Apocalypse Now" share a common subject in the Vietnam War, but the films serve as good examples of two contrasting literary strategies. Oliver Stone's "Platoon" takes a representational approach, while Francis Ford Coppola's "Apocalypse Now" offers an experimental take on what is generally the same subject. The representational approach to art or literature is to use images and/or language in order to represent clearly and faithfully something that actually exists - whether that thing is an object, such as a rock, or an idea or philosophy, such as religion. In a representational work, words used can usually be expected to retain their original meanings.

347. 584 Racial Stereotyping in Film.

This paper discusses the issue of stereotyping ethnic groups in film and television. In a 1999 Gallup poll measuring potentially offensive movie content, 62% said that they find negative racial stereotypes in movies and television to be "extremely" or "very" offensive. An additional 22% found it to be "somewhat" offensive. The results varied little among whites and non-whites, with 67% of non-whites, and 61% of whites falling into the "extremely", "very", or "somewhat" offensive categories. In the same poll, graphic violence, profanity and nudity were shown to be less offensive than negative racial stereotyping amongst all groups. These results make it clear that this is a problem that Hollywood needs to take notice of. But in the following pages, I will cite examples of recent Hollywood prime offenders of negative racial stereotyping.
