99. 16510 Chance, Fate, and Choice

In this paper we will examine and compare the way conflict arises in Alexander Pushkin?s ?The Queen of Spades? and in.?Oedipus The King.? by Sophocles. By understanding and comparing these two great works of fiction, we hope to come to an understanding of how fate and freewill intersect, and that maybe they are the same thing. As a way to support this thesis, we will try and answerer the following questions: 1. Do the protagonists make their own trouble, or has some supernatural force set them up? 2. Is society at fault, or is it an internal force, even an unconscious one, that leads him or her into trouble? 3. Do external events, such as chance or fate, determine one's life, or can one willfully choose and determine one's own destiny.

100. 16751 Gabriel?s Defense Mechanisms in James Joyce?s "The Dead"

In this paper, we will deconstruct the defense mechanisms of the character Gabriel Conroy in James Joyce?s "The Dead". In this work, we find that Joyce?s technique of free indirect discourse is at work. Gabriel Conroy is the viewpoint character, and so we will examine the passages where he is "thinking to himself," but in a way that may contain subtle criticisms of which he seems unaware We will construct this analysis by identifying the main defense mechanisms which Gabriel seems to be using., and by describing ways in which the narrator's contributions to the free indirect discourse exposes and criticizes those defense mechanisms, though without Gabriel fully understanding what is going on. In sum, we will demonstrate how both the defense mechanisms and their critiques can operate simultaneously in the same passage.

101. 16807 James Joyce's Construction of Deviance in the "Circe" Chapter of Ulysses

This fifteen-page undergraduate paper examines James Joyce?s construction of deviance in the ?Circe? chapter of his novel, Ulysses. The author notes that in order to convey his concept of deviance, Joyce constructed very detailed scenes involving human activities many people consider degenerate and taboo, such as masturbation, voyeurism, gluttony, dementia, alcoholism, defecation, urination, and sado-masochism. The deviance of these activities was emphasized by Joyce, and he constructed the chapter so that most of them directly involved his protagonist, Leopold Bloom.

102. 20122 George Orwell Preoccupation

This paper examines a few of George Orwells more popular essays, anmely "Shooting of an Elephant" and "The Hanging" in an effort to see what motivated Orwell to write as he did, about where he did, and if possible to detect differences in his persona, as portrayed in his famous works, Animal Farm and 1984. Orwells essays were not really considered 'famous' until the publication of his two books, so perhaps the change in style reflected his awareness of a need for a more radical approach.

103. 20216 George Orwell - Sabotaging His Life?

This paper is a brief look at the possibility that George Orwell sabotaged his own life, despite his successes. When things were going well in his life he tended to just 'drop' things and move on, and the contention of this essay is that despite his fantastic work, and a lot of it is mentioned here, that for some reason Orwell was more content to rant and rave about systems and the like as opposed to fitting in with society.
