22.143 The Mystery of the Universe "Its Stars and Planets".
Scientific discoveries and tools have changed our knowledge of the universe over the years. With astronomers past and present, we have learned about the planet Earth, our Sun, and the planets that surround. This paper details the history of astrology, prominent astronomers, and the solar system. Early Greek astronomers knew many of the geometrical relationships of the heavenly bodies. Some, including Aristotle, thought Earth was a sphere. Eratosthenes, born in about 276 BC, demonstrated its circumference. Hipparchus, who lived around 140 BC, was a busy and talented astronomer. He classified stars according to brightness, estimated the size and distance of the moon, found a way to predict eclipses, and calculated the length of the year to within 6 1/2 minutes. As we can see, scientists and the advancements in technology have played a major and profound part in our knowledge today of the universe we live in. If it weren't for astronomers of past and present and their desire to learn just what is out there, we would have very little information about our world and beyond.

23.279 Science Versus Astrology.
Some astrologers and sympathetic defenders claim that scientists are often engaging in astrological research under new labels. But to be astrological such research would have to involve birth charts, which is not the case. This paper researches the history of astrology, it's creed and systems of belief as it relates to science. The history of astrology is an important part of the history of the development of civilization; it goes back to the early days of the human race. The unchangeable, harmonious course of the heavenly bodies, the profound impression made on the soul of man by the power of such heavenly phenomena as eclipses, the feeling of dependence on the sun, the giver of daylight--all these probably suggested in the early ages of the human race, the question whether the fate of man was not dependent on these majestic manifestations of Divine power.

24.16432 Considering the Possibility of Life on Mars
In the early 1900?s, people looked into the night sky and believed there was, or at the very least had been, life on Mars. Intricate canal systems were thought to be seen crisscrossing the planet, and were used as evidence of a wondrous civilization. When we got closer to the Red Planet, we learned much more. Rather than an amazing series of agricultural waterways, or buildings that would rival Egypt, Mars is only a giant desert, which could never support life, or could it?

25.20627 Saturn and the Cassini Mission
This paper shall discuss Saturn and various aspects of the Cassini mission that has been sent there. The paper will examine what is already known about Saturn, its rings, and its moons in brief. Additionally, some time will be spent on the particulars of the mission itself. Some of the controversy surrounding the mission will be mentioned, however, primary focus will be placed on understanding the scientific merits and interest in the mission.

26.20669 Back on Mars: The Spirit and Opportunity Rovers
This paper shall discuss the current Mars Rover expeditions on the Red Planet. The two rovers are named Spirit and Opportunity. The paper will examine several aspects of the current mission to Mars. First, it will present a brief background on Mars. Second, it will provide an examination and description of the objectives of the mission. Finally, the paper will illustrate some of the initial results of the mission thus far.

27.20714 Supermassive Black Holes
This paper shall discuss black holes and their nature. The paper will briefly open with a discussion of the general properties of black holes, as identified by scientists and astronomers. Then, the paper will examine the newer concept of super massive black holes, said to exist in the centre of all galaxies. Super massive black holes will be elaborated upon by drawing on actual research being done. Particularly, the paper will use the example of evidence of a super massive black hole discovered in the galaxy M87.

28.20715 The Search for Extraterretrial Intelligences
This paper shall discuss current scientific endeavours meant to establish the existence of extraterrestrial life and specifically extraterrestrial intelligences. Two methods for such a search will be considered. The first is the more traditional radio telescope search that scans certain radio frequencies for evidence of artificial signals amongst the background noise. The second is using an optical telescope to search the sky for artificial optical pulses generated by pulsed laser beams.
